INDUSTRIAL CHARM MEETS THE DIGITAL FUTURE
The former Maggi factory site finds itself in the midst of a revival. Since 2018, the buildings have been undergoing intensive renovation and rebuilding to transform the site into a new meeting place. The Valley Restaurant has already opened in mid-2018 and the second phase of construction was completed in spring this year. As part of the overall project, the Motorworld Manufacture Region Zürich will be developed, of which Racing Unleashed is a part. On August 15 our third Racing Unleashed Racing Lounge in Switzerland will open its doors, the fourth in total.
The visionary Julius Maggi
Today the old yellow brick buildings still attest to the former factory town in the narrow Kemptthal. In the late 1880s, the Swiss entrepreneur and inventor Julius Maggi took over the hammer mill in Kemptthal and other buildings and started the construction of further factory buildings around the mill in the following years. His aim was to develop an instant soup and later produce it at the site. The nutritious, concentrated and dried ingredients were to improve the diet of working families who did not have the time to cook. So, Julius Maggi founded his company in 1886 and named it for himself.
Merger with Nestlé
In 1947, 25 years after the death of the founder, the established Maggi company merged with the Nestlé Group, which was already operating internationally on a large scale. Negotiations proceeded at a sluggish pace and were only concluded after several years. From then on, Maggi belonged to Nestlé and therefore ownership of the Maggi site was also transferred. In 2002, Nestlé sold the factory site to the Swiss company Givaudan, the world's largest producer of flavours and fragrances. Today, two thirds of the entire site are owned by MA Kemptthal Besitz AG, a joint venture of the construction project developer Mettler2Invest AG and the German Motorworld Group. The company has set itself the goal of transforming the area into a modern city district and meeting point with room for companies, start-ups, restaurants and bars.
